A ground ball near first can tempt you into a quick throw before you've checked who's covering. That's where an out can slip away. In MLB The Show 26, look at the pitcher and the runner as your fielder gathers the ball. Is the pitcher close enough to receive the toss and reach first in time If you're spending MLB 26 stubs on your lineup, give those same players a chance by reading the play before pressing the throw button. A strong roster still needs a sensible decision at the bag.

Read the route before choosing the throw

Don't let a high fielding rating make the decision for you. Once the ball is secured, compare your distance from first with the pitcher's position and the runner's progress. A defender standing a few steps from the bag has a different job from one pulled deep toward second. Watch how the pickup leaves your player facing, too. If he's already moving toward first, carrying the ball there may be straightforward. If he's stretched away from the base, a covering pitcher could offer the quicker route. There's no single answer for every grounder.

Take the nearby out without adding a transfer

When your first baseman gathers the ball close to first and has room to get there, keep moving toward the bag. You don't need to add a throw just because the pitcher is coming over. Think about everything that throw asks you to complete: release the ball, reach the receiver, then finish the play at first. Sometimes carrying it takes fewer steps. Against a quick runner, that matters. Still, don't commit blindly. A long fielding motion or awkward starting position can leave you with less time than the ball's location initially suggests.

Give the covering pitcher a proper look

The toss makes sense when the ball takes your defender away from first and the pitcher is arriving with time to spare. Check the receiver's movement before you throw. Someone heading toward the bag gives you a clearer option than someone still well short of it. It's easy to panic when the runner enters your view, but a rushed choice won't shorten either player's route. First secure possession, then judge the available play. If neither route looks comfortable, use what you can actually see instead of assuming the pitcher will arrive on schedule.

Practice the decision until it feels familiar

After a close play, think about where the delay happened. Did you throw from beside the bag Did you try to run from too far away Those details give your next attempt a purpose. Players who choose to buy MLB 26 stubs can still benefit from practicing these reads with their roster. Keep watching the pickup, the covering pitcher, and the runner. You'll start recognizing when the unassisted out is available, and when passing the ball gives you a better chance.
